On Matchday Five of the ILT20 Continental Cup in Rwanda, Henry Ssenyondo delivered a stellar performance to lead Uganda to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Nigeria.
Uganda won the toss and opted to bowl first, making two changes to their lineup from the previous game.
Frank Nsubuga replaced Joseph Baguma, while Cosmas Kyewuta came in for Fred Achelam, with Simon Ssesazi taking over wicketkeeping duties in Achelam’s absence.
Nigeria started aggressively against Uganda’s pace duo, Juma Miyagi and Cosmas Kyewuta, reaching 10 without loss in the first over.
However, Frank Nsubuga’s introduction in the third over shifted the momentum.
His first over yielded just one run, and he struck in the final over of the powerplay.
By the end of the powerplay, Nigeria stood at 52/1.
Uganda’s bowlers tightened the grip, reducing Nigeria to 71/4 after 10 overs.
Henry Ssenyondo stole the show with a sensational four-over spell, claiming five wickets for just eight runs including two maidens.
His efforts, complemented by Frank Nsubuga’s two wickets and Dinesh Nakrani’s two scalps, saw Nigeria bowled out for a modest 103 in 19 overs.
In response, Uganda’s chase began cautiously, with only one run scored in the first over.
Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya opened the innings, but Ssesazi fell in the third over.
Despite the early setback, Obuya anchored the innings with an impressive 62 off 42 balls, his second half-century of the tournament.
Captain Riazat Ali Shah chipped in with an unbeaten 18 off 16 deliveries, steering Uganda to their target in just 13 overs.
Despite the stellar performance from the batters, Henry Ssenyondo was named Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling display in the first innings that restricted Nigeria.
With this victory, Uganda remains the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
They are set to face Botswana in their next game tomorrow morning
