Ugandan international Shadia Nankya has reached a historic milestone in her career, becoming the first Ugandan female footballer to play in the top flight of women’s football in the United States.
The talented defender has signed a four-year contract with Washington Spirit, a prominent team in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), widely regarded as the best women’s league in the world.
Nankya joins Washington Spirit from Egyptian side Masar FC, where she had a remarkable stint.
Her standout performances in the CAF Women’s Champions League, where she played a crucial role in helping Masar FC secure a bronze medal, earned her a spot in the tournament’s Best XI.
Her consistent displays at the continental level attracted interest from top clubs, culminating in her move to the NWSL.
At Washington Spirit, Nankya will have the opportunity to play alongside top-tier talents such as Trinity Rodman and Croix Bethune.
She will also be under the guidance of renowned head coach Jonatan Giráldez, formerly of Barcelona Women FC, who brings a wealth of experience and a winning mentality to the team.
The club, which has been a formidable competitor in the NWSL since its inception in 2012, won its first league title in 2021 and continues to be a strong force in the league.
Nankya’s journey to the top has been marked by perseverance and excellence. She first rose to prominence in 2016 while playing for Uganda Martyrs Lubaga Women FC.
In 2018, she showcased her goal-scoring prowess by winning the top scorer’s award in the inaugural FUFA Women’s Cup, netting an impressive nine goals.
That same year, she earned her debut for the Crested Cranes, Uganda’s national women’s team, further cementing her status as one of the country’s finest footballers.
A former captain of UCU Lady Cardinals, Nankya will not only be focusing on her football career but also pursuing her studies in the United States, striking a balance between academics and professional football.
Her move to Washington Spirit is a significant achievement for Ugandan women’s football, serving as an inspiration for aspiring young players in Uganda and across Africa.
