Rugby Africa Cup: Excellent close not enough to keep Uganda’s title hopes alive

Uganda Rugby Cranes fell short to grabbing a place in the semifinals when they stumbled against the Zimbabwe Sables in their opening game at the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The Cranes lost their game by an edge with a projected score of 22-20 after having an extremely poor half first half that finished 22-00 in favour of the Sables.

Zimbabwe spent the biggest chuck of the opening period in Uganda’s half piling pressure  inorder to force a mistake and were later rewarded scored a try by Edward Sigauke who staggered Shakim Ssembusi at the open side corner followed by a conversion netted by Ian Prior.

Thé Sables didn’t stop at that but also continued to drive Uganda scrums from line outs in the supported by speed at the rucks to create multiple ground turns overs.

However in the second half, Philip Wokorach came back to run the show as he scored a try and couple of conversions with the help of his brother Innocent Gwokto.

After the game it was no suprise when Wokorach was named man of the match.

For Zimbabwe, they the continued their journey to the semifinals where they will take on Namibia.

Their game will be played on Wednesday at Wankulukuku whileUganda will play in Burkina Faso in the classification on the same day.
