Cameroon Legend, Rigobert Song has been named new Indomitable Lions new head coach.

It was made public on Monday evening by the Cameroonian Sports Ministry.

Song replaces Portuguese Antonio Conceiçao who was sacked after failing to guide Cameroon to Africa Cup Of Nations glory on their home soil. The Bronze medal won against Burkina Faso didn’t help the 60-year old in keeping his job and a FECAFOOT statement signed by its president Samuel Eto’o confirmed his departure.

“Cameroon Football Federation would like to inform the public and the football family of the end of coach Antonio Conceiçao’s contract”, the statement reads.

In a blink of an eye the FA’s press release followed that of the Sports Ministry signed by Narcisse Mouelle Kombi announced the appointment of Song.

Song is the most capped player in Cameroon history with 137 games. He featured in a record eight Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and served as captain in five (the ones he was not captain for were South Africa 1996, Burkina Faso 1998 and Angola 2010), a record, and holds the record of most consecutive games played in the tournament with 35 first team games.

The 43-year old has been working as Cameroon U-23 national football team head coach, a position he assumed in 2018 ahead of the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations campaign.

Also in 2018, Song was Cameroon’s head coach on interim basis after Hugo Broos left after his contract ended.

Song will be assisted by
Sebastien Migne and Augustine Simo while Raymond Kalla will be the team manager.

Hamadou Souleymanou will work as the goalkeeping coach while Raphael Fevre the fitness coach.

Song and his staff will be in charge of the upcoming double header against Algeria in March for the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-offs.

Can Rigobert Song Lead The Indomitable Lions To Success ?

As a graduate from Claire Fontaine Football Academy, Song obtained his coaching badges in 2012 as a mate of Zinedene Zidane after a 26 year old career for both club and country.

He has not been attached to a lot of clubs in his coaching career and to some point can lean it on the sickness.

But he was around the national team jobs since 2014. First as team manager of the senior Lions in an over two year spell to becoming head coach of the Indomitable Lions in 2016 through to becoming the coach of the Olympic Lions from 2018 to date.

The vast experience he’s got over the years on the national team helps him know more about African football as whole and can be the next Allou Cisse for Cameroon.

Song also won the African Cup of Nation’s as a player on 2000 and 2002 in Lagos and Bamako respectively.
