In a packed Lugogo Indoor Arena, with fans cheering loudly, Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Volleyball Club defeated Uganda’s Sport S in an exciting and hard-fought matchup.
REG dominated the first set and won it 25:16, thanks to strong middle blocking, which Sport S struggled to match.
However, Sport S bounced back in the second set, initially taking the lead.
REG closed the gap, leveling the score at 13-all as Sport S committed several errors, including serving into the net.
The set continued with both teams exchanging points, tying at 14-all, 15-all, 16-all, 19-all, 22-all, and 23-all, before reaching 24-all, forcing a game-deciding point.
The score was again tied at 25-all, but Sport S managed to edge ahead to 26, only for REG to level the score once more at 26-all.
Ultimately, Sport S claimed the set 28-26.
In the third set, with both teams tied at one set apiece, REG scored first.
As the set progressed, REG minimized their errors in the final moments, moving ahead to 21-20.
Sport S responded with a timeout but managed to level the score at 21-all.
However, REG scored two quick points to reach 23 and, despite Sport S’s response, managed to close out the set 25-22, taking a 2-1 lead in sets.
Heading into the fourth set with momentum on their side and the home crowd quieting down, Sport S struck first.
However, communication breakdowns in their receiving game cost them dearly.
REG capitalized on this and won the set 25-20, sealing the match victory.
At the ongoing CAVB Zone V Championship, no Ugandan team has been able to beat a team from Rwanda so far.
REG finished Group B action with a perfect record, securing a spot in the quarterfinals, which begin tomorrow
