At the ongoing Obuya Cricket Tournament 2025, PUSH Cricket Club clinched a nail-biting 17-run victory over Lenana School in Nairobi, securing their second win in as many games and sealing a well-earned place in the finals.
Having won the toss under overcast skies, PUSH opted to bat first, ringing in two changes to their XI — Wahidi Sserwada and Twalib Mustafa replacing Dhariya Patel and Abaad Malik.
The decision seemed to pay off early.
Their dependable opening pair, Hamid Munyigwa and Julius Okema, came out firing, racing to 19 without loss in just two overs.
But as has become an unfortunate pattern, Hamid was again the first to depart — this time run out in a moment of hesitation between the wickets.
His dismissal slowed the tempo, and Julius soon followed, caught behind after a short-lived stay.
Promoted to No. 3, Gururaj Shelharaju looked to rebuild, but his innings was also cut short by another catch behind the stumps.
With wickets falling around him, Amir Ochaya stood tall, anchoring the innings with a composed 33 — the top score of the match.
Captain Edward Mugwanya joined him at a crucial juncture and contributed a gritty 29, guiding PUSH to 61/3 at the halfway stage and then 95/4 by the 15th over.
PUSH eventually crossed the 100-run mark in the 17th over, finishing on 131/8 — a competitive total, but one that left no room for complacency.
Lenana’s reply began in emphatic fashion. Their openers matched PUSH’s early aggression, reaching 19/0 after just two overs, aided by a dropped catch that could have altered the momentum.
The boundaries kept flowing as they blazed through the powerplay, ending it at 43/0 after six overs, with the chase very much on track.
But the game began to shift in the middle overs.
The bowlers, led by assistant captain Kasimu Adam and all-rounder Julius Okema, tightened the screws.
The breakthrough finally came in the 9th over, and despite Lenana reaching 69/1 at the halfway point, the required run rate began to creep upward.
At 96/2 after 16 overs, Lenana still looked poised for a late surge.
However, the dismissal of Peter Ngure — who had anchored their innings with a well-made 29 — changed the complexion of the game.
His departure sparked a collapse that the rest of the batting lineup couldn’t recover from. Wickets tumbled as the pressure mounted, and the scoreboard stalled.
Kasimu and Julius each bagged two wickets, turning the tide in PUSH’s favor.
Lenana ultimately ran out of steam, finishing on 114/6, 17 runs short of their target.
After the match, a relieved Kasimu reflected on the tense affair:
“We didn’t bat particularly well, but the team held its nerve.
The bowlers stepped up and got us through a tough game.”
With this gritty win, PUSH remain unbeaten and are now one match away from completing a dream run to the trophy.
They’ll face the formidable Royal Rangers tomorrow morning — a clash that promises high stakes and high drama.
A win there would give them powerful momentum heading into the final, as they look to return to Uganda with silverware in hand.
