Renowned rally driver Ponsiano Lwakataka, a name synonymous with the thrilling world of motorsport in Uganda, has expressed his dissatisfaction with the Federation of Motorsport Uganda (FMU).
For over 25 years, Lwakataka has been a mainstay in Ugandan motorsport, earning respect for his performances and skill behind the wheel.
However, despite his decades-long career, Lwakataka has been vocal about what he feels is unfair treatment and discrimination by the sport’s governing body.
In an emotional interview, Lwakataka voiced his frustrations over his treatment by FMU, which he believes has been discriminatory.
“I am not happy with FMU,” he said.
“For the long period which I have been in Rally, I am among the few to never have had an event sanctioned. After 25 years, I requested them to help me with securing a good rally car but they have kept me in confusion.”
Lwakataka’s rally car, a Subaru Impreza N12, is far from the state-of-the-art machines used by other top competitors. According to Lwakataka, his car is outdated and poorly suited for modern rallying, making it difficult to compete at the highest level.
“The car I am driving is very bad compared to those driven by other drivers. It’s old and long for a rally, and other drivers call it ‘Musota’,” he lamented.

The issue for Lwakataka goes beyond just the car. He feels that FMU has repeatedly denied him the opportunity to have his events sanctioned, leaving him to struggle with limited resources.
“Other drivers have had their events sanctioned, but mine? They keep playing me off,” Lwakataka said.
“Maybe I am nothing, just a skeleton without a big relative in the sport, that’s why they discriminate against me.”
Despite these challenges, Lwakataka’s passion for the sport remains strong. He continues to push forward, determined to make his mark in Ugandan motorsport.
His frustration with FMU seems to stem not from a lack of talent or effort but from what he perceives as systemic favouritism that leaves him at a disadvantage.
Lwakataka’s sentiments were shared during his speech at the Realstars Sports Agency Awards, held on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at Lazio Restaurant in Kololo.

During the event, Lwakataka was awarded the title of Best Rally Driver of January 2025 after a standout victory in the first event of the National Rally Championship.
However, his triumph was tinged with disappointment as he used the platform to make his grievances with FMU public.
Lwakataka’s frustration highlights a broader issue within Ugandan motorsport, the lack of support for some of the country’s most talented and experienced drivers.
Despite his long career and impressive track record, Lwakataka feels as though he has been sidelined by the governing body in favour of more privileged competitors.
