Pilsner King, the latest innovation under Uganda Breweries’ flagship Pilsner brand, has announced a UGX 285 million sponsorship package for the 21st edition of the prestigious Masaza Cup, reaffirming its position as the tournament’s Official Beer Partner.

The announcement was made at a colorful ceremony held at Bulange, Mmengo, and officiated by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, who applauded the Masaza Cup for its continued role in promoting unity, youth empowerment, and cultural preservation.

“Sport is not just for entertainment. It creates employment, strengthens both body and character, bridges social divides, and even generates revenue for government through taxation,” said Owek. Mayiga. “The Masaza Cup delivers all of these benefits while celebrating our identity as a people.”

First held in 2004, the Masaza Cup has evolved into one of Uganda’s most followed and impactful football tournaments, with teams representing the 18 counties (Masaza) of the Buganda Kingdom. It remains a powerful platform for talent development, community pride, and cultural expression.

Speaking at the event, Lillian Kansiime, Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), emphasized that Pilsner King’s renewed support reflects a deep alignment with the Kingdom’s values.

“Our continued sponsorship of the Masaza Cup is rooted in our belief in the power of community and bold ambition, values that are at the core of Pilsner King,” she said. “We’re proud to be part of a platform that doesn’t just entertain but uplifts and connects Ugandans.”

This year marks the second consecutive edition that Pilsner King is backing the tournament, reinforcing Uganda Breweries’ long-standing partnership with the Buganda Kingdom and its commitment to supporting local sport.

Masaza Cup Organizing Committee Chairman Suleiman Ssejjengo hailed the tournament’s reach and influence, noting its ever-growing fan base and impact on the local football ecosystem.

“The Masaza Cup is more than football it’s a cultural engine and a springboard for emerging talent,” he said. “Last year, over 380,000 fans attended the matches, and the tournament reached over 9 million people across Uganda. That tells you everything you need to know about its power.”

The 2025 edition will feature 104 matches across 16 match days. The first 10 match days will host nine matches each, setting the stage for an intense knockout phase and a grand finale.

With all 18 Masaza teams competing for the coveted crown, this year’s tournament promises an electrifying blend of football excellence, cultural celebration, and community spirit.

“I urge young players to embrace this opportunity,” Ssejjengo added. “Many stars of Ugandan football started here — and many more will rise this season.”

Pilsner King’s investment reaffirms its position not only as a supporter of sport, but as a catalyst for community growth, talent elevation, and cultural pride in Uganda.
