  • Nkumba 2-1 Busitema

Busitema University suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the hands of Nkumba University despite taking an early lead in their University Football League clash.

The visitors made a dream start just two minutes into the game when Joseph Dinya capitalized on Gabriel Opio’s cross to put Busitema ahead.

However, history had shown that Nkumba was capable of bouncing back from early setbacks, having done so against St. Lawrence University in a previous encounter where they won 3-1.

Busitema, nicknamed the Baboons, needed to stay vigilant, but their advantage was short-lived.

In the 14th minute, Nkumba was awarded a penalty after Kennedy Ssewakambo was brought down in the box.

Ssewakambo made no mistake from the spot, leveling the score at 1-1.

As the game progressed, Nkumba, also known as the Beach Boys, began to pile on the pressure.

In the 20th minute, Ssewakambo delivered a dangerous cross from the right, but Kagimu Marvin failed to convert, sending his first-time effort wide.

Seven minutes later, Ssewakambo was once again instrumental, delivering another cross after some impressive dribbling, but Ishmael Lubega’s shot was saved by Busitema’s goalkeeper, Ongu Emmanuel.

Nkumba continued their attacking intent, with Acram Juma threading a ball through to Joshua Komori in the 38th minute, but his shot was blocked by Ssali Lawrence.

Just before halftime, Komori made another threatening run and fired a shot towards the near post, forcing a solid save from Ongu. The first half ended level at 1-1.

Nkumba started the second half strongly, with Komori having a shot blocked inside the box as the hosts maintained their attacking pressure.

Their persistence paid off in the 78th minute when Komori latched onto Buruhani Tasumba’s free-kick to double Nkumba’s lead.

The Beach Boys continued to control the game, creating more opportunities in the dying minutes.

Komori connected well with substitute Silver Ochwo’s teasing cross into the box but was unable to keep his header on target.

Nkumba held onto their 2-1 lead until the final whistle.

The result sees Busitema stay in third and Nkumba go up to second place in Group A with seven points, one behind IUIU, who played out a draw against ISBAT on Sunday.

University Football League action continues on Wednesday, February 19, with Bugema set to host KIU in a Group D encounter.
