Bugema University is projected to have secured a spot in the Pepsi University Football League semifinals after a tense 0-0 draw against Muteesa I Royal University in their second-leg quarterfinal on Monday.

However the match, played in Bugema, ended prematurely due to security concerns, but the result was enough to see the hosts through on the away goals rule following their 1-1 draw in the first leg in Masaka.

From the outset, Bugema dominated possession pushing forward in search of an early breakthrough. In the 12th minute, Kimuli Dennis found Musuk Innocent on the left wing, but his cross was comfortably claimed by Muteesa’s goalkeeper Mugerwa Fred, who had a busy afternoon keeping the hosts at bay.

Muteesa I Royal had their chances too, with Eddie Jjunju flicking a dangerous ball towards Patrick Busuulwa in the 20th minute but the striker failed to direct his effort on target. Male Joseph then squandered a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock for Bugema five minutes before halftime, reflecting the home side’s frustrations in front of goal. Just before the interval, Kalungi Ronald denied Busuulwa Akaya from the edge of the box, ensuring the game remained goalless at the break.

The second half continued in the same fashion, with Bugema controlling play but failing to convert their chances. Seven minutes after the restart, Busuulwa Patrick won the ball high up the pitch but sent his shot wide. In the 66th minute, a dangerous cross from Elakas narrowly missed Arthur Jjombwe allowing Muteesa to clear their lines.

However, the match was abruptly halted due to security concerns in the 78th minute, forcing an early stoppage. Despite the premature ending, Bugema advanced on result depending on away goals rule having scored in their first-leg draw in Masaka, with the aggregate tied at 1-1.

But on the official side, it’s yet to be known if Bugema is through with a decision to be made later on. If gone postively for the hosts, it will mark a major achievement for Bugema, who finally break their quarterfinal curse after four consecutive eliminations at this stage.
