Twenty years ago, a number of Ugandan female footballers switched to represent Dr Congo for a couple of reasons forcing Uganda’s absence from high level championships, one of these ladies was Oliver Amani Mbekeka.
Regarded by some as arguably the best female player they’ve watched, Mbekeka has since gone against all odds to become the first female head coach to lead a men’s Top-flight side in the country.

Considering only one out of the 12 teams (Amus WFC) in the Finance Trust Women Super League currently have female head coach(Faridah Bulega), shoes Mbekeka has already wore at Lady Doves and on the Queen Cranes (U20) team.
Mbekeka announced her name on the UPL scene in memorable fashion, guiding Lugazi FC to their first ever win in the Startimes Uganda Premier League, since earning promotion to this season, Lugazi were yet to win a league game in their first five games.

Sam Ssemugugu’s 25th minute header was enough to secure a historical win away to Express FC in Hamz Stadium Nakivubo.
Mbekeka was appointment on interim basis following the departure of Sadiq Ssempigi whom she was deputizing since July.
Their next league game will be against NEC FC at home in Najjembe on Wednesday 30 October.
However Last month in Kenya, Jackline Juma took charge of Talanta FC and won her first game against Sofapaka in the Kenya Premier League on Tuesday too.

So this looks like it’s going to open up opportunities for female coaches on the continent to be trusted with men’s football clubs at top level.
