Uganda Premier League
- Maroons 0-1 Vipers SC
Allan Okello was once again the difference-maker as Vipers SC secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Maroons FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League match played at Luzira Grounds.
Both sides showed resilience and determination but it was Okello’s composure from the penalty spot early in the second half that sealed all three points for the visitors.
The penalty was awarded after Maroons defender Edward Kabona was judged to have handled the ball inside the area. Okello made no mistake, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way in the 47th minute as he bagged his 17th goal of the season firmly cementing his place at the top of the league’s scoring charts.
The result lifts Vipers to 59 points, opening up an eight-point gap over second-placed NEC, who are set to host Mbale Heroes on Frida. It’s a vital win for the reigning champions, who continue their pursuit of a domestic double. They have already booked a place in the semi-finals of the Uganda Cup, further underlining their ambitions.
After taking the lead, Vipers managed the game well, though they were nearly pegged back in the dying minutes when Norman Odopio’s thunderous strike struck the crossbar, offering Maroons a glimpse of a late equalizer that never materialized.
The defeat leaves Maroons eighth on the table with 34 points and dented their hopes for a strong finish to the season.
For Vipers, however, the road to reclaiming the Uganda Premier League title looks increasingly promising. They will aim to maintain their momentum when they host UPDF next Tuesday at Kitende.
