In a tense, low scoring clash in the regular season at the Lugogo Indoor Arena, the City Oilers edged past the Victoria Crocs 60–56 to bounce back from their recent loss to the JKL Dolphins.
The win marks the Oilers’ third of the season and provides a much needed boost in their playoff chase.
The Oilers took an early lead, finishing the first quarter ahead but momentum shifted in the second as the Crocs began to press.
With just over a minute left in the half, Victoria led 27–24. However, the Oilers rallied late to level the score at 29–29 heading into halftime.
The third quarter began with a quick two-point strike from the Crocs following a defensive lapse by the Oilers.
For several minutes, the game remained neck and neck until the Oilers edged ahead with six minutes left in the quarter.
Despite that, several turnovers allowed the Crocs to regain a narrow 41–40 advantage. They maintained this edge, winning the quarter 46–43.
The final quarter saw Joseph Chuma tie the game at 46–46, reigniting Oilers’ hopes.
The team soon regained the lead, but not without setbacks however Fayed Baale was forced off due to injury after a hard fall, yet the Oilers pushed through with resilience.
Still, they struggled with turnovers and missed free throws, keeping the game closer than necessary.
With one minute left, the Oilers led 59–54, a late traveling violation by Cyrus Wobusobozi gave the Crocs a chance to equalize but a missed three point attempt with 16 seconds remaining left them short.
The Oilers sealed the win with two late free throws to make it 60–56.
Ben Komakech led the Oilers with a game-high 16 points matching Victoria’s Deng Gai Isaac Jioka. Choul Nyout dominated the boards for the Crocs with 11 rebounds, while Fayed Baale recorded five assists in the game.
The victory lifts the Oilers to 10th place with three wins and four losses from seven games, keeping them just outside the playoff spots.
Up next, they face Livingston at YMCA on May 3.
The Crocs, still looking to rebound from their loss to KCCA Panthers, take on the Titans at Lugogo on May 7.
