The Uganda Boxing Federation president Moses Muhangi has cast blame on the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) and the National Council of Sports (NCS) over the delayed preparations for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games qualifiers.

The team is due to fly to Dakar, Senegal early next year for the final Olympic qualifying games, however, this could hit a dead end as a result.

Speaking at the press conference on Tuesday morning, Muhangi blamed the NCS and UOC for having done little to aid the Federation’s preparations ahead of Tokyo 2020.

We find ourselves in a challenging situation that could limit our performance in upcoming Championship. We have been delayed by the system that was structured by UOC and the NCS.

He said.

The process of registering all the boxers to compete for the slots to Olympics started in October, and we now have 187 boxers. But after the registration process, we worked out everything and the budget but when we presented it to the NCS and UOC, they said they don’t have the money to finance the process and we got stuck because it’s them who changed the process we had and as we speak today, we don’t have any boxing team.

He exclaimed.

This has disorganized and frustrated us and now we are going to start from zero, yet we have less than 60 days to have a team for the qualifiers.

A frustrated Muhangi added.

Moses Muhangi also notes that the UOC received finances from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year in December 2018.

In most cases, each sport in Olympics get preparation finances from International Olympic Committee, and each sport got that money but it’s only us [Boxing] yet to receive. There is a letter dated 4th December 2018 of which we got a copy with the Olympic Solidarity Athletes Unit writing to all NOCs and directing them to finance the athletes to prepare for the games. But this has never happened until now.

Muhangi revealed.

UBF’s Detailed plan:

Although the Federation is enduring financial challenges, UBF has released the program through which they will get the final 13-man team to represent Uganda in the Senegal qualifiers.

According to the released plan, there will be a boxers’ briefing and technical meeting on 14th December 2019 at Lugogo.

On the 15th December, there will be a general medical check-up and weighing plus the draws again at Lugogo.

The trials or eliminations will be held between 16th and 23rd December 2019 to get the best 26 boxers who will go into a nonresidential camp from the 2nd to 9th January 2020 at Lugogo.

12th January will be the final elimination day where they will get the final 13 who will enter residential camp until the team will set off to Dak Senegal for Olympics qualifiers.
