The Uganda International Badminton series shuttled off on Thursday 3rd October 2024 at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
These follow the just completed Kampala International Future series that climaxed on Sunday 29th September where Uganda came out second with 8 medals behind India on 13.
This is the third International Badminton tournament held in Uganda this year as per the BWF calendar and promises a lot with point collection for the different individuals in order to qualify for 2028 Los Angeles Olympics .
Uganda will have over 50 shuttlers like Alyaan Mawani, Kenneth Comfort Mwambu, S6 candidate Tracy Naluwooza, Augustus Owinyi among others in the different categories (Singles, women doubles, mens doubles and mixed doubles).
Men – Women singles and Men’s doubles will start at the Round of 32 on Friday while in the rest shall commence on round of 16 .
However one of those taking part in the tournament is Muzafaru Lubega who is Uganda’s seed 1 after the departure of Brian Kasirye. Lubega managed to outline his target in the tournament;
“As a player my target in this tournament is to put Uganda at the top” he started
“I will do that by performing through winning some major medals in order to accumulate points to qualify in the 2028 Olympics, Los Angeles” he added
“I started participating In this competitions in 2011’s Juniors categories, since then I can happily say have grown and gained more exposure and experience in these tournaments.”
“Lastly am happy we have had these two tournaments here at home because one get to have a chance without spending for an air ticket and gives a lot of chances to the local lads here” he concluded
After these, Lubega will set his eyes on the Zambia International and Botswana International in order to accumulate his points for the upcoming Olympics.
The Uganda International Badminton series will climax on Sunday 6th October 2024.
