Ugandan volleyball maestro Mugisha Bavuga Benon has made an instant impact upon his return to Rwanda Energy Group (REG) Volleyball Club, guiding the team to victory in the 2025 Kwibuka Volleyball Memorial Tournament just weeks after taking over as head coach.
Appointed on a two-year deal, Mugisha officially arrived in Kigali on May 30, and within a month, he had already delivered REG’s first-ever Kwibuka tournament trophy.

Mugisha is no stranger to REG’s success as he was part of the club’s historic 2019–2020 season, when they clinched their first national title.
His return has rekindled that winning spirit, solidifying his reputation as one of the top volleyball coaches in East Africa.
Born and raised in Uganda, Mugisha’s coaching journey began in 2011 as an assistant coach with Sport-S Volleyball Club.
By 2013, he had risen to head coach and later moved to Rwanda in 2016 to join REG for the first time.
His resume also includes a stint as assistant coach for the Uganda national team.
Mugisha holds certifications from international coaching courses, including FIVB Levels 1 and 2, and has won multiple championships in both Uganda and Rwanda.
In Uganda, Mugisha has won several prestigious volleyball titles.
As head coach of Sport-S Volleyball Club, he led the team to multiple national league championships, victories in the KAVC International Tournament, and the Aporu Akol Memorial Tournament.
His coaching success in Uganda laid the foundation for his regional reputation, showcasing his ability to build competitive teams and consistently achieve top results in both domestic and regional competitions.
This year’s Kwibuka Volleyball Memorial Tournament, held from June 20 to 22 in Kigali, brought together clubs from Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The tournament, organized annually in remembrance of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, had initially been scheduled for earlier in June but was postponed due to a scheduling conflict with the Kigali International Peace Marathon.
In the men’s final, REG VC defeated Kenya’s CHEMA in four sets [25-18, 25-27, 25-22, 25-18] to claim the championship.
Kenya’s KPA finished third after beating Uganda’s Chazpir.
The male players also stood out individually included;
Thon Magambo was named Most Valuable Player (MVP)
Akumuntu Kavalo – Best Receiver
Muvara Ronald – Best Blocker
Angilo Gédéon – Best Server

Individual performers
In the women’s category, Police WVC beat RRA WVC 3-1 to win the title.
APR WVC took third place after defeating Kepler WVC.
With this victory, Mugisha and REG VC not only lifted a trophy but also honored the memory of the genocide victims in a meaningful and triumphant way.
