All is set for the final of the 2020 Airtel Masaza final between Gomba and Buddu at the St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Saturday, 6th March.

The Kabaka of Buganda, His Majesty, Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II will grace the final like the norm has been since 2004 when the tournament was started.

The final, which was originally scheduled to be played on 21st January at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru, but was pushed forward ‘for better preparations’, will be played behind closed doors with only a restricted number of people (200) allowed to access the stadium because of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

Four-time-winners, Gomba, will battle Buddu who are looking for their second top honour that includes a trophy, gold medals and a cash prize.

Buddu defeated Gomba in the 2016 finals via penalty shootouts to lift their first and last title.

This will be the second match between Gomba and Buddu in this year’s tournament as both teams progressed from the Muganzirwazza group after they 1-all in a match that was played in Njeru.

In the group stages, Gomba defeated Kabula 4-0 on their opener before overcoming Ssese 4-3 in their second group game

While Buddu moved past Ssese 3-0 in their opener before overcoming Kabula 2-0 in their other group game.

To the quarter-finals, Buddu were pitted against Mawokota and needed two late goals by Farouk Sekayi and Marvin Kavuma to progress to the semis. Gomba rallied from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win over Bugerere courtesy of Charles Baale’s two corner kick goals

In the Semi-finals, an early Titus Ssematimba goal inspired Buddu past the defending champions, Bulemezi, while Gomba needed spot kicks to knock out Busiro 5-4 after a goalless scoreline at full-time.

A total of 93 goals have been scored so far in the tournament, with Charles Baale leading the charts at 7 goals.

This year’s third-place playoff will be a repeat of the 2019 Final as Busiro takes on Bulemeezi in a revenge mission. Bulemeezi won the 2019 title by defeating Busiro 1-0 in the final.
