Match result (Final)
Lugazi Trekkers: 150/8 in overs
Buvuma Sailors: 146/8 in 20 overs
Lugazi Trekkers won by 4 Runs
At the Florida Cricket Ground, the inaugural Mukono T20 Cup final unfolded like a script written for drama.
Lugazi Trekkers, winning the toss and electing to bat, set the stage for a thrilling contest that kept spectators on edge until the very last ball.
The Trekkers’ innings began brightly. Jaffer Ochaya’s crisp 20 off 19 deliveries and captain Amos Ahura’s fiery 19 from just 10 balls provided an early boost.
Titus Ssembuya anchored the innings with a measured 34 off 26, while Abdulshakur Doka’s late flourish of 24 kept the scoreboard ticking.
Yet, regular wickets prevented a commanding total, leaving Lugazi to finish at 150/8—a competitive but uneasy score.
Buvuma Sailors, who had beaten the Trekkers twice in the group stage, began their chase with confidence.
Early setbacks soon tested them, highlighting that past wins offered little advantage today.
Enter Harsh Panchal, whose breathtaking 84 off 51 balls, featuring six fours and seven sixes, repeatedly revived Buvuma’s hopes.
Despite his heroics, the innings was plagued by missed fields, dropped catches, and sluggish strike rotation.
Each small lapse magnified under the pressure of a tight chase.
By the penultimate over, when Panchal fell attempting a final heave, Buvuma’s faint hopes were extinguished, closing at 146/8—just four runs shy of the target.
The Trekkers celebrated a historic triumph, largely thanks to Innocent Akena’s destructive spell of 4 for 16 in four overs.
Breaking partnerships at their inception, Akena’s precision and relentless pace snuffed out momentum and earned him the Player of the Match award.
Earlier, Mukono Development had edged Buikwe Gladiators by a single run in a thrilling third-place playoff, ensuring the tournament delivered drama and intensity from start to finish.
Reflecting on the success of the inaugural Mukono T20 Cup, tournament coordinator Simon Kintu expressed his gratitude:
We are deeply thankful to Cricket Uganda, Kingsley Children’s Home, and Deep End for their incredible support in making this tournament possible.
I also want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to the senior players who took the time to mentor our young talent—your guidance has been invaluable.
We hope this is just the beginning and look forward to even better editions with stronger preparations and greater participation in the years to come
