Light High School Sseguku, a school that recently shook Uganda’s secondary school football scene with a stunning victory over traditional giants St. Mary’s Kitende, finds itself in the spotlight again, but this time for all the wrong reasons.

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has officially suspended the school from participating in the 2025 USSSA Football Boys U20 Championship due to irregularities discovered in their player registration records.

According to a statement released by USSSA on April 5, 2025, the online registration system flagged serious discrepancies in the submitted information of several players from Light High School Sseguku.

The affected players were found to have mismatched names, ages, index numbers and dates of birth when compared to earlier entries, a clear violation of USSSA’s rules and regulations for the 2025 season.

The suspension comes just days after Light High School Sseguku achieved a historic milestone by ending St. Mary’s Kitende’s longstanding dominance in the Kitende Zone school football championship.

Their dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout win, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time, had earned them widespread praise and signaled the emergence of a new football powerhouse in the zone.

The school had also triumphed in the girls’ final with a confident 2-0 win over Kings Way SS, making their double victory a landmark moment.

However, their celebrations have been cut short as they now face a disciplinary hearing scheduled for April 16, 2025, at the USSSA offices.

The hearing will require the physical presence of the school’s games teacher, all players listed in the 2025 Boys U20 album, and the academic documents submitted during player registration and enrollment.

While the school has not yet made a public statement, this development has cast a cloud over their recent success and raised broader concerns about transparency and compliance in school sports competitions.

USSSA, on its part, appears firm in upholding its regulations to ensure fairness and integrity in the tournament.
