In a night of high drama and unforgettable football, Light High School Sseguku dethroned St Mary’s Boarding School Kitende (SMASK) to claim the Kitende zone title in boys’ football, while also dominating the girls’ competition at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende.
The girls’ final saw Light High School Sseguku overcome Kings Way SS in a convincing 2-0 win. The star of the match was Violah Namugabi a S3 student, who netted a brace, scoring in each half to secure the trophy for her school.
Meanwhile Kajjansi Progressive Academy clinched third place in the girls’ category, defeating Kings Way SS 2-0 in the bronze medal match. The boys’ final between Light High School Sseguku and St Mary’s Kitende was a spectacle played under the floodlights, featuring controversy, tension, and stunning football.
A kick off delay due to license verification issues left some of Light High School’s key players sidelined, but the team fought on. The match remained goalless in regulation time, only for both goals to come in the nine added minutes, a dramatic twist that had fans on edge.
Super substitute Leonard Kasaanya gave SMASK the lead in the 97th minute but his goal sparked outrage from Light High School who claimed the ball never crossed the line. The protests halted the game for nearly 15 minutes before play resumed.
In the dying moments of stoppage time, Ikoona Kizza produced a moment of magic, curling a 30 yard free kick into the net to send the game to penalties.
The penalty shootout was just as dramatic as the match itself. Both teams missed their first two kicks but Light High School Sseguku eventually triumphed 5-4, ending SMASK’s two-decade dominance at the zonal level.
The victory marked a historic moment for Light High School, proving that a new era in school football could be on the horizon.
Despite the intense final, no medals were awarded in the boys’ category while Light High School’s girls’ team received gold and Kings Way SS took silver.
The top four boys’ teams from theKitende zone, including Light High School Sseguku and St Mary’s Kitende, will now advance to the 2025 Wakiso Regional Championship, where they will battle for a spot at the national level.
