KCCA FC moved to the top of the Uganda Premier League table after securing a 2–1 win over Mbarara City in a tense league encounter at the Rwamwanja Stadium in Kamwenge on Saturday.
KCCA, who came into the fixture needing victory to leapfrog their rivals in the title race, made a strong start and opened the scoring in the 16th minute. Defender Herbert Achayi headed in from a well-delivered Joel Sserunjogi corner to give the visitors an early advantage.
Mbarara City responded in the 26th minute through Muhammad Kanyike, who calmly finished past KCCA goalkeeper Charles Lukwago after neat work from Gaddafi Kacancu in the buildup. The equaliser lifted the home side, and the teams went into halftime level at 1–1.
Five minutes into the second half, KCCA restored their lead. Achayi, involved again, delivered a precise cross that found Ivan Ahimbisibwe, who powered a header past the Mbarara goalkeeper for the second goal.
Mbarara City pushed hard for another equaliser, making several substitutions and forcing KCCA into defensive action. The match was briefly halted in the 60th minute when defender Fillbert Obenchan was struck on the head by a powerful free kick, but he received medical attention and was able to continue.
KCCA controlled the closing stages, slowing down the tempo and making late changes to protect their lead. After four minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed a crucial victory for the 13-time champions.
The win lifts KCCA to 17 points, placing them at the top of the Uganda Premier League, while Mbarara City remain second from bottom with 5 points.
