Holiday training camp at Mt St Henrys enters day five

The holiday cricket training camp at Mt. St. Henry’s High School in Mukono has entered its fifth day, bringing together 40 young players for a 25-day program focused on cricket development, fitness, and life skills.

Organized by the Mukono Cricket Community hub, the camp includes students from Mt. St. Henry’s, Mukono Kings High School, and the Takajunge community.

The camp is scheduled to run through the end of the school term and into the holiday break. Coaching is led by Fahad Mutagana, former Baby Cricket Cranes captain and current Central Hub coach, along with Ashraf Hajuguju, a former Schools Cricket winner.

Oversight is provided by Simon Kintu, Chairman of the Mukono Cricket Community, and teacher Lawrence Habumugisha, Mt. St. Henry’s cricket manager.

Each day begins with a road run to build endurance, followed by technical cricket training in the morning.

Batting skills session

Afternoons focus on life skills through classroom lectures.

The sessions aim to help students grow both on and off the field.

Several guest speakers have already addressed the students.

Teacher Lawrence Habumugisha discussed cricket as a viable career path.

Dr. Peter Alele, Executive Director of Deep End Sports Media, spoke on fitness and sports medicine.

Ivan Cyprian Sajjabi from the Uganda Cricket Association media team shared insights on media’s role in sports.

Classroom session

Upcoming sessions will cover topics like sports psychology, discipline, growth mindset, time management, education, and public speaking, led by experts including Maria Nyende Kagoya, Tr Nakayiwa Lydia, Simon Kintu, and Joseph Kaweesi.

Evening activities focus on skill refinement, team-building games, and group reflection, often ending with a shared prayer to foster unity.

Mukono Kings batted first, scoring 51/1 in 10 overs, aided by 21 extras.

Mt. St. Henry’s had a rough start but recovered with a steady 13* from S1 Gloria Lamara and 30 extras, winning in the final over by six wickets.

Another friendly match will be played on Saturday to test progress

Mukono Cricket Community plans to expand the initiative with future camps in Kalagala and Namagunga and a tour to Fort Portal City.

Participating schools will also compete in the fourth Deep End Sports Schools Tournament, featuring teams like Gayaza High, Mt. St. Mary’s Namagunga, Namilyango College, and others.
