The defending Uganda Rugby Championship champions, Platinum Credit Heathens, began their title defense with a dominant victory over Warriors in their season opener today at Kyadondo Rugby Grounds.

The match came at a significant moment, as Heathens had just announced that Norbert Okeny would take over as captain, succeeding Charles Uhuru.

Nobert will be deputized by Santos Ssenteza, signaling a new leadership dynamic for the team.

Heathens wasted no time asserting their dominance.

Captain Okeny scored the first try just minutes after the game kicked off, followed by a second try from Ochen Trevor.

Despite missing a conversion after their third try, the hosts took a commanding 19-0 lead by halftime, with Warriors yet to get on the scoreboard.

Warriors’ 12 points in the second half were a result of defensive lapses, but the Heathens continued to control the match.

They added 26 more points in the second half, with tries from Marvin Asaba, Innocent Gwoto, Denis Etwawu, and Oluch Scott, finishing the match with a 45-12 victory.

Under the guidance of coach Mohammad Athio, Heathens have now won their last four encounters against Warriors.

Today’s performance was a strong reminder of the form that propelled them to a treble last season, offering hope for another successful campaign.

Off the pitch, discussions among rugby fans centered around potential sponsorship changes.

With Nile Special’s sponsorship contract expiring soon, many speculated whether Guinness might take over.

Some fans argue that Nile Special’s long-standing partnership should continue, while others believe Guinness’ financial backing could provide a boost to the sport.
