In the Uganda Rugby Premiership, defending champions Heathens RFC suffered back to back defeats on the road, falling to the Jinja Hippos after a tough battle on Saturday at the Dam waters.

The hosts, Hippos, were first to score through Yasin Wasswa’s penalty, but Heathens quickly responded through a precise penalty by their fly-half, Chris “Opa” Lubanga.

Despite the fightback, Heathens trailed 24-15 at halftime, and despite their efforts in the second half, the match ended 33-22 in favor of the Hippos with Julius Opio and Wasswa pulling the game further in reach of the visitors.

This loss comes on the heels of last weekend’s narrow defeat to Black Pirates, where Heathens had led 17-9 at halftime but ultimately fell 33-31 at Kings Park.

In other action, KOBS Rugby Club, sporting their new kits for the first time this season, staged a thrilling comeback against Black Pirates in the Banks Derby at Legends Rugby Club.

Despite trailing 22-9 at halftime, KOBS turned the tables in the second half, eventually winning 30-28 that to Josiah Ssempeke’s heroics towards the game end.

Pirates had dominated the first half, scoring three well-worked tries through Sydney Gongodyo, Jeremiah Okello, and Timothy Kisiga, while William Nkore added seven points from the boot.

KOBS’ only points in the first half came from three penalties by Joseph Aredo.

The second half saw KOBS tighten their defense, restricting Pirates to just two penalties from Nkore and returnee Ivan Magomu.

KOBS responded with tries from Aredo and Stuart Mwayi, the latter a brilliant individual effort from a quick restart.

Aredo added the conversion and two more penalties, bringing KOBS within one point in the final play.

With time running out, Ssempeke stepped up to score a clutch drop goal, securing a thrilling 30-28 victory for KOBS.

The win ended Pirates’ unbeaten streak and pushed them down on the table.

Jinja Hippos are now the only unbeaten team in the league, sitting at the top of the table with 26 points.

The Pirates follow in second place, tied on 24 points with third-placed KOBs, while Rhinos occupy fourth with 22 points.

Winless Elgon Wolves remain at the bottom of the table with zero points, having lost all six of their opening games.
