FUFA suspends Emmanuel Kiweewa

The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) through the FUFA Referees Standings Committee (FRSC) has indefinitely suspended Football and Futsal Referee, Emmanuel Kiweewa for soliciting a bribe from a coach.

In a letter addressed to the Football and Futsal referee, dated the 22nd October 2019, the FRSC asserts that they had been notified of the allegations against Kiweewa.

The details of the matter are that Emmanuel Kiweewa contacted a University coaching staff soliciting for a bribe so as to manipulate or influence the results of the match.

In an Audio released by Football 256, the Centre Referee for the said match is heard speaking to Uganda Martyrs University Head Coach Noah Mugerwa as he tries to convince him into getting at least a million shillings for the result to be influenced in their favor.

The audio was recorded in Luganda but we have translated the conversation to English.

Tell the manager to finalize everything today.
Kiweewa is heard telling Mugerwa.
Let them get me like one million shillings, then you can leave the rest to me. You have invested a lot and you wouldn’t want to get here only to fail at this level yet we can do that for you.
For your information, every player is afraid of me because every time I am in charge of a match, I mean business and no one tries to mess with me”

he added.

The aforementioned game ended in a 1-all draw after 90 minutes before St. Lawrence progressed to the final after penalty kicks.

The result is thought to have infuriated the party at losing end, thereby prompting them into releasing the phonecall conversation.

According to the FRSC, Kiwewa’s case is in the hands of the FUFA Ethics Investigatory Chamber, the body mandated to conduct the investigation.

The Ethics and Investigatory will issue the referee with sanctions to the Kiweewa after conducting the investigations.

It is feared Kiweewa could be banned for a period that is not less than a year if found guilty.

However, like all Ugandans, he will a right to appeal against any decision taken.

Emmanuel Kiweewa has been one of the fastest rising referees in Ugandan Football and Futsal and has been in charge of a number of games.

He was involved in another controversial match in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League between KCCA FC and Bright Stars FC, during which it is alleged he disallowed Bright Stars’ goal after the ball went through the net.
