Patricia Kawuma and Emmanuel Egesa clinched Gold at the inaugural SOM Easter Open Chess Championship on Monday 1st April at the Sports Outreach Ministries (SOM) Chess Academy in Katwe, Makindye.
Kawuma, a senior Five student at Pride College, Mpigi won the Land mark event’s Best Female Category with 7 points and a Rtg of 1764.
The teenager walked away with a gold medal which was accompanied with a brown envelope of One Million Ugandan Shillings.
Having attracted over 150 participants, the men’s category had more of the players with Egesa Emmanuel going home with the Best Open Section.
Egesa just like Kawuma walked away with Gold and the top cash prize of One Million Uganda Shillings after collecting 7 points and a rtg of 1990.
With a total prize pool exceeding 10 million Ugandan shillings (including additional prizes in form of trophies and medals), that was communicated earlier, all was given out evenly to the respective winners.
