Denis Onyango saves five as Sundowns defeat Cape Town to MTN8

Former Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Denis Onyango saved five penalties in the shootout to help his side, Mamelodi Sundowns defeat Cape Town City to win the 2021 MTN8.

The game ended 1-all after Extra time to force a penalty shootout.

Thapelo Moreno put Sundowns ahead in the first before Fargrie Lakay levelled matters to force the game into Extra time and eventually penalties.

During a poor exhibition of penalty taking, Onyango was the hero as he saved five of the seven penalties he faced.

TheUgandan shot-stopper saved Khanyisa Mayo, Fagrie Lakay, Abdul Ajagun, Tariq Fielies and Thamsanqa Mkhize kicks to help his side to a narrow 3-2 penalty shootout victory.

Sundown scored through Andile Jali, Neo Maema and Peter Shalulile while Haashim Domingo, Sibusiso Vilakazi, Aubrey Modiba and Mosa Lebusa failed to convert from the spot.

Sundowns finally laid their hands on the MTN8 after 13 years since they last won it by beating Orlando Pirates 1-0 in 2007 while the tournament was known as the SAA Supa8 through an early goal by Brent Carelse.
