Cwinyaai Dominates as Stars Shine at 7th Absa Captain’s Bell Golf Tournament

Joseph Cwinyaai delivered a masterclass in golf at the ongoing 7th edition of the Absa Bank Uganda Captain’s Bell Tournament, while Deo Akope proved that form is temporary but class is permanent, and Peace Kabasweka returned to winning ways in style.

Cwinyaai set the tone early with a sensational round of 63 on the opening day—matching the UGC Kitante course record. His performance, which featured an impressive nine birdies, propelled him to the top in the Gross (amateur) category. He cruised to victory with a remarkable 16-under-par total of 200 over 54 holes, finishing a full 16 strokes ahead of teenage runner-up Anthony Otukei. This marks his third consecutive title win.

Meanwhile, professional golfers saw Deo Akope claim victory in commanding fashion. The seasoned pro carded an 11-under-par 277 over 72 holes to secure the top spot among the pros.

In the women’s category, Peace Kabasweka held her nerve to edge out Harriet Kitaka by four strokes, finishing with a 234 over 54 holes.

The tournament wraped up on Saturday  evening with the main event—an 18-hole round featuring Absa Bank Uganda staff, including new Managing Director David Wandera, and Uganda Golf Club captain Paul Charles Rukundo. Board Chair Keith Kalyegira also joins in the action.

The Captain’s Bell Tournament is a prestigious annual event that ushers in the club captain’s new management team. It has grown to become a celebration of competition, camaraderie, and sportsmanship. This year, professionals competed for a prize kitty of shs.20 million, as part of a total sponsorship package worth sh179 million from Absa Bank Uganda.

“As we support this tournament for the 7th year running, Absa’s UGX 179 million investment this year reflects our deep commitment to growing golf in Uganda, nurturing talent and celebrating moments that bring us together as a community.” Absa Uganda Managing Director David Wandera said at the closing ceremony before adding,

“Today’s UGX 20 million professional prize kitty is our way of rewarding the excellence we have witnessed here.”

Absa Bank Uganda, now in its seventh year of supporting the Captain’s Bell Tournament, has consistently invested in the sport. Its support has extended to enabling top Ugandan golfers to compete internationally, including in the prestigious Magical Kenya Open on the European Tour.
