Uganda Women’s Senior National Team, Crested Cranes will take part in 2021 COSAFA Women Challenge Cup
This was confirmed by Federation of Uganda Football Association ( FUFA) on Thursday morning after the tournament hosts accepted their request to participate in the tournament
The women’s tournament will be held between 15th-26th September in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
“FUFA confirms that the Uganda Women’s Senior National Team (Crested Cranes) will take part in the COSAFA Women Challenge Cup 2021 slated to take place between 15th – 26th September in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.” a FUFA statement read.
The 2021 COSAFA Women’s Championship will be 9th edition of the COSAFA Women’s Championship, an women’s international football tournament for national teams organised by COSAFA, teams from Southern Africa.
This year’s competition will take on additional significance as it comes just a month before the start of the qualifiers for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations that are scheduled to begin in October, providing competing sides with the chance to fine-tune their plans for their bid to reach the continental showpiece.
Uganda will face Ethiopia at the first round of the 2022 AFCON qualifiers and if they defeated their neighbors, they will face either Kenya or South Sudan for a place in the finals.
South Africa have won the last four championships, and seven out of eight in all, with only Zimbabwe breaking their run on home soil in 2011.
The last Uganda team to take part in the COSAFA tournament was the U17 Women’s team and came back with the U17 trophy.
