Clement Mzize struck twice in the opening 20 minutes as Tanzania sealed their place in the quarterfinals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) with a 2-1 victory over Madagascar at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
The Taifa Stars, cheered on by a lively home crowd despite swathes of empty seats, made a blistering start.
Mzize opened the scoring in the 13th minute, pouncing on a rebound after Mudathir Yahya’s fierce effort crashed off the upright.
Seven minutes later, he doubled the lead, timing his run perfectly to meet Feisal Salum’s precise free kick and steer it past the goalkeeper.
Madagascar, shaken by the early onslaught, found a lifeline in the 34th minute. Mika Razafimahatana drilled home from close range after neat build-up play from Lalaina Rafanomezantsoa.
The second half was more cagey, with Madagascar pushing for an equalizer. Jean Luc Ranaivoson came close to leveling, but Tanzania’s defence held firm. Shomari Kapombe almost restored the two-goal cushion for the hosts, but the score remained unchanged.
The win keeps Tanzania perfect in Group B with three victories from three games, making them the first team to qualify for the last eight.
