South Africa pulled level on points with Group C leaders Algeria after a hard-fought 2–1 win over Guinea in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Monday at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda.
Bafana Bafana struck early, taking the lead inside ten minutes. Thabiso Kutumela latched onto a headed clearance in the Guinean box and threaded a clever pass to Neo Maema, who calmly slotted home with his left foot.
Guinea hit back in the 37th minute with an excellent team goal. Mohamed Bangoura surged down the right flank on an overlapping run before firing a low cross into the area, where Moussa Camara finished first time to level the score.
The decisive moment came in the 54th minute. Wayde Jooste delivered an inch-perfect cross, and Kutumela met it with a clinical first-time finish to restore South Africa’s advantage.
Guinea piled on late pressure in search of an equalizer. In the 88th minute, Bangoura unleashed a thunderous strike from distance that goalkeeper Samukelo Zulu tipped onto the crossbar. Substitute Mohamed Diabate met the rebound with a header, but it flashed into the side netting.
South Africa held firm to secure three crucial points, moving to four from two matches — level with Algeria but trailing on goal difference. Guinea remain on three points from three games and now face a must-win clash against Algeria on Friday to keep their hopes alive.
