Uganda Cranes head coach Morley Byekwaso is urging his side to rise from the disappointment of their opening defeat as they prepare for a must-win clash against Guinea in the 2024 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Friday night at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.
The Cranes suffered a heavy 3-0 loss to Algeria in their Group C opener, a result that left fans frustrated and the team under pressure. But with qualification still possible, Byekwaso believes the response must come now — and it must be strong.
“We are under pressure, that’s the truth,” Byekwaso said.
“But pressure brings out character. We’ve worked hard since that loss, and this is our moment to respond.”
The Algeria result saw many fans exit the stadium early. Byekwaso understands the disappointment but made a passionate appeal for renewed support.
“We need our fans now more than ever,” he said. “We’re not giving up. This team still has spirit, still has hunger. We ask our people to believe again.”
Uganda will be up against a Guinea side full of confidence after a 1-0 win over Niger. While the Cranes defeated Guinea in World Cup qualifying last year, Byekwaso isn’t counting on history.
“That was a different day, a different game,” he noted. “Only a few players remain from that match. This is a new challenge — and we must earn everything.”
With Group C finely poised, the Cranes must win to stay in contention. Defender and stand-in captain Rogers Torach says the players are fully aware of the task ahead.
“We’ve put Algeria behind us,” Torach said. “Now it’s about pride and purpose. The group is united. We know what’s on the line — and we’re ready to fight.”
Victory would reignite Uganda’s CHAN campaign, while a loss would all but end their hopes of advancing.
“We’ve had honest conversations as a group,” Byekwaso added. “No excuses. It’s time to show who we are. This is not over.”
