Buddu Ssaza, the reigning Masaza Cup champions, have officially named Joseph Kayondo as their new team captain ahead of the much-anticipated 2025 Masaza Cup tournament. The announcement was made on Tuesday, marking a significant leadership transition as Buddu sets its sights on defending their title.
Kayondo, a dynamic right full-back, enjoyed a remarkable 2024/25 season that saw him rise to national prominence. He was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the 2024/25 Pepsi University Football League, playing a pivotal role in Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi’s successful campaign. His performances were lauded across the country.
His accolades last season were nothing short of impressive. Kayondo helped Uganda Martyrs clinch a historic treble—lifting the University Football League, the Inter-University Trophy, and the East African University Trophy. He was also a key contributor to Buddu’s 2024 Masaza Cup victory, making the transition to captaincy a natural progression. His personal statistics reflect his influence on the pitch—5 goals and 2 assists as a defender.
Having joined Buddu from three-time champions Mawokota last year, Kayondo quickly established himself as a vital figure in the squad. He now steps into the captaincy role, succeeding Puis Ssebulime, who has since rejoined Mawokota. Kayondo’s elevation to captain not only rewards his performances but also underlines Buddu’s faith in his leadership abilities.
Buddu’s title defense will not be an easy journey. The team has been drawn into the competitive Bulange group, which features formidable opponents including record winners Gomba, as well as Busiro, Buluuli, Busujju, and Ssese.
The tournament curtain-raiser promises fireworks, as Buddu will kick off their campaign against Gomba in the official opening match on Saturday, June 21, at the Kitovu Sports Arena in Masaka City. The match is expected to draw massive crowds and will serve as an early test of Kayondo’s leadership under pressure.
As Buddu looks to make history by securing back-to-back Masaza Cup titles, all eyes will be on their new captain. With a glittering season behind him and a leadership role ahead, Joseph Kayondo is ready for the challenge.
