Crested Cranes head coach Sheryl Botes has affirmed Uganda’s readiness for their crucial 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifier against Ethiopia.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Botes acknowledged early challenges in camp but emphasized that the team has regained confidence and is prepared to execute key principles in Friday’s match at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo.

Uganda aims to capitalize on home advantage before traveling to Addis Ababa for the return leg on February 26.

“The first few days in camp were a bit challenging as the players sought to regain confidence. However, we have key principles we want to apply in the match, and I am confident we will execute them well,” Said Botes.

Despite her confidence, Botes remains cautious of Ethiopia’s attacking strength, highlighting key players such as Loza, Senaf, and Aregash.

“Ethiopia is a strong offensive team with a new coach and eight players from their U-20 side that competed at the 2023 African Games in Ghana. Loza is a standout player, Senaf has netted 14 goals in their league, and Aregash is a powerful attacking force. Their midfield is also highly mobile,” she added.

“The Ethiopia team I remember from my time in South Africa played a very possession-based game, but they tried different tactics against Nigeria in the African Games. We will need to be compact and neutralize Loza, who is a threat on both feet and possesses great experience.”

She noted Ethiopia’s dynamic midfield and possession-based style but stressed the need for a compact defensive approach to neutralize threats.

“I want to really ask people to come and support. This is the senior team, the best players will be displaying their skills.” she concluded

With Uganda’s primary goal being WAFCON qualification, securing a strong result at home will be crucial before a potential next-round clash against Tanzania or Equatorial Guinea.
