The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has confirmed the appointment of Bashir Mutyaba as the new Director of Football Development, replacing Ali Mwebe who left the role to become FIFA’s Regional Technical Consultant for East and Central Africa.

This is a defining moment for the Magogo administration and Ugandan football, as the federation continues to roll out its Technical Master Plan, with youth and grassroots development positioned at the heart of Uganda’s long-term football success.

Mutyaba’s elevation comes as no surprise to many who have closely followed Uganda’s football development story. As FUFA’s Youth Football Development Officer, he has been at the core of several transformational programs, breathing new life into the FUFA Juniors League, launching structured scouting networks, and spearheading CAF and FIFA-supported coaching education courses across the country.

Now replacing Ali Mwebe, who held the development role for over 10 years, Mutyaba is not just a safe pair of hands but also the man to build on strong foundations and take Uganda’s youth football system to the next level.

In his new role, Mutyaba will oversee FUFA’s entire football development department, with responsibilities that touch every stage of the football ladder, including managing the U15 and U17 national teams, overseeing academy licensing and accreditation, running youth leagues and regional tournaments, supervising coaching and referee development pathways, and coordinating talent identification and scouting frameworks across the country.

His leadership is expected to consolidate the progress made under Mwebe while introducing new energy, ideas, and tools to expand the reach and impact of development programs, especially in underserved regions.

FUFA has already communicated Mutyaba’s appointment to FIFA, and the global football body has responded with full backing. The endorsement signals confidence in Uganda’s development strategy and reflects FIFA’s belief in Mutyaba’s ability to implement youth programs that align with international standards.

This support adds weight to FUFA’s renewed focus on building sustainable youth pathways, not just for national teams, but for clubs, academies, and community programs.

FUFA has urged all stakeholders clubs, coaches, schools, academies, and fans to support Mutyaba in his new role as he takes on one of the most important jobs in Ugandan football.

While the leadership baton has changed hands, FUFA insists that the overall development strategy remains intact. Mutyaba is expected to continue and strengthen key initiatives, including growing the FUFA Juniors League, scaling the academy registration and monitoring system, running national youth coaching and goalkeeping courses, and supporting regional and CECAFA qualifiers for youth national teams.

With Bashir Mutyaba officially replacing Ali Mwebe, FUFA has opted for trusted experience and homegrown leadership to guide Uganda’s football future. This change comes at a time when the country’s young talents are beginning to make waves across the region and continent. The task now is to keep that pipeline strong, inclusive, and future-ready.
