Augustus Owinyi shined brightest at the City Tyres Badminton Challenge 7th Edition that took place in Lugogo Indoor Arena on Sunday.

Having shuttled off on Thursday 17th October 2024 with the qualifiers, Friday was the day when immense tournament action took place.

With Schools, Universities, Corporate companies, Expatriates and Proffessional categories bringing their best well sieved shuttlers.

However Owinyi managed to come out on top, winning the Men singles finals plus Doubles in both the Men and Nations Challenge with Lubega Muzafaru.

Owinyi managed to win Men Singles beating Micheal Reagan Nsubuga with two straight sets (21-13, 21-17).

Before reaching this stage, Owinyi had earlier edged Fred Nyaribo while Nsubuga sank Ofoyuru Eric in the semifinals.

In the Men’s doubles with Lubega, they beat Micheal Nsubuga Reagan + Tayebwa Shelton rounding it up with a straight two set win over India in the Nations Challenge.

For the Women singles, sweat was sighted as two Uganda National team stars in Tracy Naluwooza and Fadilah Shamika were sighted going toe to toe.

The two played out a three set game that arose emotions of fans and coaches on both benches.

Despite the noise by the Mbogo High students in the right wing of the arena, Players were extremely concentrated and were hoping to each take the victory home.

However Nalwooza managed to clinch the first set 21-16 with her skill set helping her to tire down the Rubaga Girls candidate.

Going into the second set, Shamika managed to comeback strong with a convincing display   to earn her a 21-14 win that sent the Mbogo High students into sombre mode.

In the third set, tempers flaired up in the air because of a Line umpire’s call at 20-19 that would send Naluwooza to celebration citing that the shuttle was on the court to halt Mbogo’s celebrations with her Coach, William Kabindi to disagreement.

Later on, with everything settled Shamika edged the final set 23-21 to clinch this 7th Edition’s trophy and bragging rights.

It’s also to be noted that Mbogo High School( best performed school at the tournament) and Uganda National Badminton team head coach William Kabindi managed to win his Veterans Singles Men Above 50.

With Uganda Badminton Association President Annet Nakamya also taking home the Veterans  Women Singles Above 50 Gold alongside UBA technical personnel Harriet Semugabi Nattabi settling for silver.
