The Girls Schools Cricket Week launched with energy and promise, as young cricketers took to five different grounds to show off their skills.
From debut wins to dominant performances, the day was packed with compelling moments that showed the growing depth of talent across the tournament.
Light SS, the defending champions, made a thunderous statement in their opener against St James SS.
Bowling first, they dismissed their opponents for just 17 runs in 15 overs—14 of those were extras—highlighting just how tightly they controlled the game.
Their bowlers, led by Tino Sarah with figures of 3 wickets at 0.5 economy, delivered 10 maiden overs.
Chasing such a modest target took only 2.1 overs, sealing a 10-wicket win and setting the tone for their campaign.
Meanwhile, Mt. St Henry’s Mukono, newcomers to the tournament, made their debut memorable by defeating Gayaza High by 17 runs.
Agenrwot Shatra’s steady 42 runs laid the foundation, while tight bowling and sharp fielding, including four run-outs, defended their total effectively.
Olila High showed their class against Masindi SS, thanks to big batting from Malisa Ariokot (45) and a five-wicket haul from Nandera Immaculate.
They won by 90 runs, keeping their aspirations firmly on track.
Sacred Heart SS also stood out, notching the tournament’s highest score so far—166/6—against Gulu High, before restricting them to 62.
They followed it up in the afternoon with a second win, this time over Masindi SS.
Jinja SS dominated the Nile Region derby against Iganga SS, putting up 128/4 before skittling Iganga for just 37.
Iganga, however, bounced back later in the day with a convincing win over Nyakasura School, thanks to strong top-order batting and smart bowling led by their captain.
Elsewhere, St John’s SS overcame rain and the Duckworth–Lewis method to beat Good Heart SS by 59 runs, while Masaka SS comfortably chased down 63 to beat St James.
Ndejje SS’s clash with Mt Rwenzori was the only match abandoned due to persistent rain.
With Sacred Heart leading Group B with two wins and Light SS asserting dominance in Group A, the early action has already hinted at a fiercely competitive week ahead.
