Uganda is gearing up to host the second edition of the highly anticipated East Africa Inter-Schools Speed Skate Championships at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole on Sunday, 13th April 2025.
This prestigious event will bring together schools from across East Africa, including participants from Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and host nation Uganda.
The East Africa Inter-Schools Speed Skate Championships are part of an exciting initiative aimed at promoting speed skating in the region. The first edition of the championships was held in Kenya, and the event will rotate across different East African countries. Uganda’s turn to host the event highlights the growing enthusiasm for speed skating within the region.
Moses Dungu, the President of the Uganda Skating Federation, expressed his excitement about hosting the event, while also emphasizing the need for improved infrastructure to support the growth of the sport in Uganda.
“We are delighted to be hosting the second edition of the East Africa Inter-Schools Speed Skate Championships. The first edition was held in Kenya, and it’s on a rotational basis across the East African region,” said Dungu.
However, he pointed out the challenge of limited facilities and infrastructure, which has hindered the widespread adoption of speed skating in schools across Uganda.
“We don’t have many schools practicing speed skating due to the lack of infrastructure and equipment. This has led to a higher representation from international schools, which follow a different academic curriculum and have holidays around this time,” he added.
Dungu also called on the government to prioritize the development of sports infrastructure, stating.
“We want more schools to take up the sport, as stipulated by the new government sports law. But we challenge the government to invest in infrastructure development. Across Africa, we do not have standard parks or facilities to support such sports at the school level.”
This year’s edition promises thrilling competition, with the winners set to walk away with significant rewards. The top athlete will take home a cash prize of 3 million Uganda shillings and a gold medal, while the second-place finisher will be awarded 2 million Uganda shillings and a silver medal. The third-place finisher will receive 1 million Uganda shillings and a bronze medal.
These prizes are designed to not only motivate the participants but also to increase the visibility of speed skating in schools across the region.
