The Uganda senior national basketball team, the Silverbacks has progress to the quarterfinals of the 2021 AfroBasket in Rwanda after they shocked Nigeria 80-66 on Tuesday.
The Silverbacks came into this game with off-court troubles, leaving on borrowed time in Kigali due to inadequate funds.
But they put that aside to defeat Africa’s number one nation to progress to the quarterfinals where they will face Cape Verde.
The star man for Uganda was Robinson Opong who shot 6-for-10 from the thre-point range to record a game high 19 points. Ishmail Wainwright, Arthur Kaluma and Deng Geu notched in 11 points each.
The Silverbacks had a impressive start to the game to lead by 12 points at the end of the first quarter ( 24-12).
Silverbacks then extended that lead to 13 points going into the break as they lead 44-31.
In the third quarter, Opondo took over as he scored three 3-pointers in the third to ensure Uganda took an 18 points lead into the last quarter (67-49).
They held on in the last quarter for their second win of the tournament and hence progressed to their first-ever quarterfinal at the AfroBasket.
Uganda will face Cape Verde in the last 8 on Thursday. Cape Verde finished top of group A with five points in three games.
