Derrick Kakooza and Steven Sserwada were on target in the second half as Uganda made a perfect start to their AFCON U20 campaign by dismissing Mozambique 2-0 in a group A match played at Stade Olympique, Nouakchott, Mauritania on Monday evening.
Kakooza netted from the spot in 57th minute while Sserwada sealed the Hippos dream start with a tremendous strike in the 86th minute.
The Hippos dominated the most part of the first half but failed to find the breakthrough in they have in the opening half as Richard Basangwa, Najib Yiga, Isma Mugulusi, Ivan Bogere and Kakooza failing to convert the half chance they got.
But in the second half, after imposing alot of the pressure on the Mozambique backline, the Hippos were gifted a penalty after Mozambique defender Aylton Messias handled the ball in box for the referee to point to the spot in the 56th minute.
Kakooza stepped up and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put the Ugandan debutants ahead.
With just four minutes to the death of the game, Steven Sserwada who came on for Ivan Bogere bulleted in the Hippos second after a wonder setup by Kakooza.
With the win, Uganda move top of the group A standings, level on points with Cameroon but superior goal difference and will be back in action on Wednesday this week against Cameroon before their last group game against the hosts Mauritania on 20th February 2021.
