Herbert Achai has completed a return to his former club, KCCA FC, after the Kasassiro Boys confirmed the return of the versatile defender, tying him down to a two-year contract. The club termed the move as part of their strategy to strengthen their defensive line ahead of the 2025/26 season.
Achai, 25, had previously departed KCCA in 2024 upon the expiration of his contract, which was never renewed after negotiations failed, and subsequently joined Express FC on a one-year deal. During his time in the Red Eagles colors, he earned acclaim for his leadership, adaptability, and consistent performances both at left-back and in central defense.
KCCA, nine-time champions of the Startimes Uganda Premier League, finished fifth in the 2024/25 season with 50 points, 19 behind eventual title winners Vipers SC. The Lugogo based side also fell a game short in the Stanbic Uganda Cup, after going all the way to the final and falling short against the same opponents. In response to a rather disappointing season, the club has embarked on a summer rebuild to return to the summit.
Why Achayi’s Return Matters
Achai brings back with him leadership and familiarity, as well as a wealth of experience, including service as assistant captain during his first stint at Lugogo. The defender is also able to play across the backline. As such, his return offers tactical flexibility and depth to the squad.
Under a yet-to-be-finalized head coach, KCCA will look to leverage Achayi’s presence to tighten their defense, a key area that underperformed last season.
Herbert Achai is expected to join KCCA’s pre-season training immediately, with the official unveiling planned this week at Lugogo. Fans will anticipate his debut in upcoming friendly matches as the club continues to rebuild under new tactical guidance.
This defensive reinforcement sends a strong message: KCCA is intent on returning to Uganda’s top football clubs, and Achai is central to that ambition.
The Uganda Premier League has seen the arrival of bigger competitors, bettering KCCA FC over the past few years with NEC, Kitara, and others.
