Men kicked off their campaign with a 24:14 victory over Brazil. However, they faced a setback against Samoa, losing 32:17.

Sending them off to a 5th place playoff, where they struggled against Portugal, falling 47:5, but ended the tournament on a high note with a 17:7 win over Japan, securing a 7th place finish.

The Lady Cranes opened their campaign with a 24:7 defeat against Colombia 24:7 but dominated Belgium 29:5.

However, their push for a higher finish was halted by Thailand, who edged them 19:17 in the 5th place playoff and a 21:19 narrow loss to the Czech Republic meant an 8th place finish overall.

Both teams will stay in South Africa for the second round from on 7th and 8th March.

The top eight from both rounds will advance to round 3 in Krakow, Poland on 11-12 April. The top four teams from the Challenger series will earn a shot at the HSBC sevens Play-Off in Los Angeles on 3-4 May.
