As Mamelodi Sundowns gear up to face German giants Borussia Dortmund at TQL Stadium, head coach Miguel Cardoso has once again spoken with pride and purpose about the club’s journey to the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Following their historic 1–0 win over South Korea’s Ulsan Hyundai, the only victory by an African side so far Cardoso used his pre-match press conference to reflect on what the moment means for the club and African football.
Iqraam Rayners’ goal in the tight Group F opener not only sealed three points but also announced Sundowns’ intent on the world stage.
“We earned the right to be here,” Cardoso said.
“And we’re proud to represent our continent at this level. It’s a pleasure to be part of this tournament well organized, highly competitive and full of opportunity.”

His message was clear, Sundowns didn’t come to make up the numbers. The Portuguese coach sees the Club World Cup as both recognition of past success and a launchpad for future growth.
“What we want is to grow,” Cardoso added.
“Competing with the best pushes us forward. The challenges help us improve.”
The win against Ulsan has already turned heads, but a bigger challenge awaits in Dortmund, a European powerhouse with pedigree and expectations.
Still, if Sundowns can match the belief of their coach with bold performances on the pitch, the African champions may be writing more history soon.
Kickoff is set for today, Saturday June 21, and all eyes will be on whether Sundowns can turn Cardoso’s vision into reality since they are currently top of the standings with 3 points with Dortmund in second with 1 just like Brazilian side Fluminise who lay third.
