The Uganda International Challenge Badminton Championship officially commenced today, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at the Lugogo Indoor Arena.
The prestigious tournament has attracted players from thirty (30) countries, all competing to earn crucial points toward qualification for the USA 2028 Olympic Games.
This marks the second Olympic qualifying event on the African continent this year, following the conclusion of the All Africa Senior Championships on Sunday, February 16.
With the qualification window closing on April 28, 2027, the stakes are high for athletes striving to secure their spots on the global stage.
Uganda’s badminton sensations, including Husina Kobugabe, Gladys Mbabazi, and Tracy Naluwooza, led by Fadilah Shamika, remain hopeful of earning qualification points.

While the men’s competition is significantly tougher, all Ugandan players still have a fighting chance to make their mark in the tournament.
As the tournament shuttled off with qualification rounds, we had the opportunity to speak with Olivia Nakajja about her performance and aspirations.

“So far, I have played two games and was awarded a bye for the other,” she shared.
She further expressed her ambitions, stating, “For this tournament, I am aiming to earn some points and apply for the upcoming tournaments. Winning, if possible, would be the ultimate achievement.”
Verona Sadat Razavipour also shared her enthusiasm and readiness for the challenge ahead.

“I am so prepared for this challenge. I have been training for the past six months, and I feel like I have improved. I hope to perform well,” she stated confidently.
Reflecting on her experience, she added, “This is my third edition of the Uganda International, and I have learned a lot. One key lesson is that I need to be stronger and faster to compete with Indian and European players.”
The Uganda International Badminton Challenge will run until Sunday, February 23, 2025, promising thrilling matches and intense competition as players battle for valuable Olympic qualification points.
