The FUBA National Basketball League tips off this Friday 11th March with the seven-time defending Champions City Oilers taking on the Namuwongo Blazers in a mouth-watering bout.

The men’s division will have 13 teams after the Warriors failed to register, while the women’s division will have 10 teams, as it has always been the case in recent seasons.

Our Savior and Tropical Royals are the recently promoted teams in the men’s division, while the women’s division remains unchanged after the lower division women’s leagues were not played to the end, resulting in no promotion.

A game between the City Oilers, who have won the championship seven times in a row, and the Nams Blazers will headline Friday’s opening night.

Last season, the Nam Blazers defeated the City Oilers 71-66 on the KIU court, but after the game, FUBA gave the Oilers maximum points after the Blazers used the wrong player in Jeffrey Kayemba Soro, who did not receive a playing license.

The last time a full season was played was in 2019, but last season the league was halted on June 3 when the NCS ordered FUBA to immediately suspend the league due to non-compliance with Covid-19 regulations.

However, after the resumption, FUBA decided to restart the season on October 2, but the move was awaiting confirmation from at least eight teams. Each team was asked to register with a fee of Ugandan shs. 600,000.

By the deadline, only five League teams in the men’s category had confirmed registrations to (UCU Canons, Betway Power, UPDF Tomahawks, KCCA Panthers and Falcons) while the rest failed to register.

On the women’s side, only two teams in the UCU Lady Canons and KCCA Leopards registered and consequently the season was canceled.
